IPL Photorejuvenation
What is IPL photorejuvenation?
IPL photorejuvenation is not technically a laser treatment; instead, it uses a broad-based light as opposed to a single wavelength that lasers use. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light, and because of this wide spectrum of light, it is able to treat many different skin conditions. It can improve pigmentation caused by sun damage, freckles, age and even scarring. It can also help with redness issues such as rosacea, blood vessels and flushin
How IPL photorejuvenation works
IPL photorejuvenation uses light and heat energy to target particular areas of the skin. Initially, light is introduced to the skin in many wavelengths. As it penetrates the skin, that light is converted to heat. The heat is strong enough to damage specific chromophores (parts of the skin that absorb light). Those chromophores are related to certain skin conditions such as unwanted pigmentation or facial veins, thereby destroying them.
What to expect during your appointment
IPL treatments only last about 30 minutes. Depending on your skin type, multiple sessions may be recommended to achieve the best results. Most people do not find IPL treatments uncomfortable and anesthetic is not usually needed. The side effects are minor and typically include a sunburn-like sensation and some swelling. Most patients are able to resume their normal activities immediately following in-office treatments.
What to expect from the results
As with most treatments, results are dependent on the patient’s lifestyle, skin type and how many sessions they have already received. For the first few treatments, results may last a few months (longer if sun exposure is avoided).* After a series is completed, some people can wait a year or more before needing another procedure. Patients usually need a series of 3-5 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for best results. Although it may sound counterintuitive, people with lighter brown spots may need more sessions than people with darker spots.
