You’re likely familiar with Radiesse, one of our favorite dermal fillers here at Revive Medical Spa. In its original form, Radiesse is a volumizing filler used to restore volume loss and soften the appearance of wrinkles. One of the many reasons we love Radiesse is that it also helps restore your own natural collagen by acting as a scaffold under the skin and stimulating collagen production. Whereas undiluted Radiesse is used to provide volume, hyperdilute Radiesse is distributed across a larger surface area in a more superficial plane to stimulate neocollagenesis (new collagen) and elastin formation.
While the term “hyperdilute Radiesse” sounds complicated, it is simply Radiesse that has been thinned out with saline solution. Using a cannula – a thin tube – this diluted mixture is then placed in areas of the skin showing sagging and laxity. The calcium hydroxylapatite molecules in Radiesse then stimulate the body to build new collagen in the treated areas.
How does it work?
When Radiesse is diluted and then injected into areas of collagen loss, the body is triggered to produce new collagen. Of the three types of collagen our bodies produce, Type I collagen is the type that provides the structural latticework that supports our skin. Unfortunately, our body’s production of Type I decreases every year after our 20th birthday. So that by the age of 45, our skin is supported by 25% less collagen. That’s when we really start to notice the wrinkles, lines and volume loss! What makes hyperdilute Radiesse such a great treatment option is that it has been shown to stimulate new production of Type I collagen as well as elastin, a protein that keeps skin flexible.
What body areas can be treated with hyperdilute Radiesse?
Almost any area with skin laxity and volume loss can be treated. The most commonly treated areas include
- Neck and decolletage
- Mid to lower face
- Upper arms
- Hands
- Buttocks
- Above the knees
- Abdomen
When will you see results and what side effects can you expect?
You may see mild immediate improvement after the treatment, but the collagen stimulaion effects will begin gradually over 3-4 weeks post treatment, continuing for up to 6 months. If you decide to stop treatments, your aging process continues however you are aging from a better place due to the increased collagen. Side effects of very mild bruising, swelling and discomfort are possible after your treatment. These effects are temporary and will resolve within a few days.
How many treatments will you need?
Generally, 2 to 3 treatments are needed to achieve the desired aesthetic effect. These treatments are completed approximately 6-8 weeks apart. The number of treatments needed depends on your overall skin health, amount of skin laxity and volume loss. A maintenance treatment is recommended every 12-18 months after the initial series in order to maintain results.
