High Cholesterol
What is high cholesterol and what are the risk factors?
High cholesterol (Hyperlipidemia) is a chronic medical condition where the low-density lipoprotein (LDL, also called bad cholesterol) is elevated above the normal range. Triglycerides are another type of cholesterol. When a person eats more calories than the body needs, the body turns those calories into triglycerides, which are then stored as fat. Oftentimes there are no specific symptoms of high cholesterol. High cholesterol, if untreated, can cause other health problems like heart disease and atherosclerosis (deposits of plaque in arteries),which can lead to a heart attack or a stroke.
The risk factors of high cholesterol pood dietary habits (eating food high in “bad fats”), being overweight or obese, family history and smoking.
What to do
During a medical visit with our healthcare provider we will discuss screenings labs to determine if you have high cholesterol levels. Lipid panel measures your total cholesterol levels, as well as LDL (“bad cholesterol”), Triglycerides and HDL (“good cholesterol”). We will talk about ways of keeping your body healthy and strong. If you are already suffering from high cholesterol, we can help with exploring healthy lifestyle options that could improve your cholesterol levels and potentially lower them to the normal range. Our program is geared toward exploring healthy lifestyle options that can help control and manage high cholesterol- high LDL and high Triglycerides. We will also discuss medication management, if needed.
