High Blood Pressure
What is high blood pressure and what are the risk factors?
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries. High blood pressure (Hypertension) is a blood pressure that is higher than normal. The blood pressure usually fluctuates throughout the day. Having blood pressure measures consistently above normal may result in a diagnosis of high blood pressure.
The risk factors of high blood pressure include age, race, family history, being overweight or obese, lack of physical activity, using tobacco products, too much salt in dietary intake, too little potassium in dietary intake, excessive use of alcohol, stress. Certain medical conditions, like sleep apnea, kidney disease, diabetes and thyroid problems, can also be contributory.
