Facial Volume Loss

What is facial volume loss?

Facial volume loss is usually noticeable in the form of hollow/sunken cheeks or temples and thin lips. This can give off a grim appearance. Hollow cheeks appear to recede inward into the facial bones, instead of projecting outward. A thinning of the lips can also occur, even at an early age. Around the 30s, you might notice that your lips are becoming thinner and deflated.

The causes of facial volume loss

As with most aesthetic concerns, the aging process often results in a loss of facial volume. Not only do our bodies produce less collagen (which gives skin its elasticity and plumpness), but subcutaneous fat is lost as we grow older. A sudden loss of weight, smoking and other poor lifestyle choices can also accelerate this look.
Thin lips occur for the same reason that your skin begins to sag over time: lost collagen and hyaluronic acid (HA). Collagen and HA give our lips plumpness, moisture and an overall look of youthfulness. Lip shape and size is also determined by genetics. If your lips are naturally small, there’s a good chance that your lips will begin to thin out in your late 20s.
