Diabetes

What is diabetes and what are the risk factors?

Diabetes (Type 2) is a chronic medical condition where the body can’t use the insulin it makes as well as it should, which causes chronic elevation of blood sugar levels. This condition, if untreated, can cause other health problems like heart disease, kidney disease and eye disease. Prediabetes and then diabetes develops over many years and usually patients do not notice any obvious symptoms.
The risk factors of diabetes include age, race, family history, being overweight or obese, lack of physical activity, poor dietary habits, having insulin resistance/prediabetes and non-alcholic fatty liver disease.

What to do

During a medical visit with our healthcare provider we will discuss screenings labs to determine if you have any problems with blood glucose levels. We will screen you for insulin resistance problems as well (a precursor to prediabetes/diabetes development). We will talk about ways of keeping your body healthy and strong. If you are already suffering from prediabetes or diabetes, we can help with exploring healthy lifestyle options that could improve your blood sugar levels. Our program is geared toward exploring healthy lifestyle options that can help control and manage prediabetes and diabetes. We will also discuss medication management, if needed.
